State University Museum of Art – Museum Store
Clean…balanced…warm…bold…impact; these
are a few of the visual and emotional characteristics the LSU Museum
of Art wanted to express in its new Museum Store located on the
ground floor in the Shaw Center for the Arts. The schematic design
was influenced by these inspirational words and also by the need
to work within a limited budget and tight deadlines. The store
design goals included stimulating and increasing the store sales
through the traffic-driven space planning and merchandise placement,
choosing materials and finishes that reflected the design aesthetics
of the surrounding Shaw Center for the Arts, and achieving the
desired results on schedule and within the budget. The results
included space planning, fixtures, and materials that reflected
the inspirational words important to the client. A clean, neutral
color palette was used so as not to compete with the merchandise,
but instead, to emphasize it. A flexible fixture package was specified
to transform with the needs of the merchandise. Subtle wood tones
were introduced to warm the space, using clear maple in a custom
designed cashwrap, perimeter display cabinets, and a feature wall
located in the rear of the store on the main axis. Fixture placement,
a balanced floor plan, and feature walls lead Museum Store customers
through the spacing, increasing their exposure to the merchandise
and driving customer sales.
